Chapter 1: Introduction to Teaching Young Learners
In this chapter, you will learn about the main characteristics of Young Learners of different ages, ways of approaching their learning, types of learning environments, and the use of the caretaker speech in the ESL classroom.
Chapter 2: First and Second Language Acquisition
In this chapter, you will read about Behaviourism and language learning mechanisms and theoretical approaches that explain First Language Acquisition.
Chapter 3: Language Learning versus Acquisition
In this chapter, we will look at the difference between language learning and language acquisition in the ESL classroom, how to teach grammar communicatively, and the use of grammar games and videos that integrate the four language skills specifically to do with teaching Young Learners.
Chapter 4: Teaching Grammar to Young Learners
In this chapter, you will be introduced to lesson development and ideas on how to teach grammar to kids. It will also introduce you to samples of topic-centered syllabi for Kindergarten and Primary school. You will analyze an ESL textbook for kids and identify the approaches and techniques used in the textbook. This knowledge will prepare you for designing your own course.
Chapter 5: Communicative Language Teaching and Task-Based Learning
In this chapter, you will learn about Task-based Learning (TBL), the difference between linguistic ‘activities’ and pedagogical ‘tasks’, types of tasks and the phases in a TBL lesson plan.
Chapter 6: Storytelling in the ESL Classroom
This chapter introduces you to the fascinating world of Storytelling and how to use it in the ESL classroom. You will learn different techniques and how to integrate the listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills as well as grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation to the ESL classroom through Storytelling.
